Ladies In Red
Amsterdam is a picturesque city with canals and buildings that date back as far as the 1300s. But its Dutch Renaissance style architecture, clogs and flowers are far from the real reason why most travel to this controversial destination. Apart from the legalization of marijuana, the city is also one of the first to legalize prostitution, with Amsterdam’s Red Light District being the main attraction.

The Red Light District, or Rossebuurt, is bursting with everyone’s darkest fantasies, from brothels and sex shops to museums. Despite everything you’ve heard about this neighbourhood, the fact is that this is one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of the city. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through the district lined with charming 14th century architecture, such as the Old Church, the oldest building in the entire city.
Curiosity is sure to get the best of you, so come by at night when the area really comes alive. You’ll find men of all ages, giggling groups of women, couples holding hands and loads of Japanese tourists walking through the streets. Through shop windows you’ll see women of all nationalities parading their ‘wares’ daring you to come inside for a private show. This form of window prostitution is unique to the Netherlands, but don’t take any pictures of the ladies as this is strictly forbidden.
Despite what you may think, the Red Light District is actually the safest in the city as there are loads of policemen patrolling the streets along with private bodyguards that are employed by the girls themselves. Recently restored streets and facades as well as a number of classy eateries are transforming this once seedy part of town into a trendier night spot. Stop in at Café Pacifico, one of Europe’s first Mexican restaurants, for a tasty bite to eat.
